The Nikola House hotel is located in the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod and surrounded by a great many cultural monuments, theatres, temples and other interesting places, worth seeing.

The Kremlin

It’s a real heart of the city tenderly loved by its citizens. It is here that they arrange the most important meetings, as one can enjoy incredibly romantic sunsets while wandering along the Kremlin.

Every traveller who has come to Nizhny Novgorod is right to feel the must to see the illustrious Kremlin of Nizhny whose walls keep age-old history.

On the Kremlin’s territory you can find several museums (the State Centre of Modern Art ‘Arsenal’, the Museum of Territorial Army of Nizhny Novgorod, The Museum of Art, The Museum of Regional Studies), a lot of monuments, The Archangel Michael’s Cathedral, The Eternal Flame Memorial, the viewing point from where you get access to a really spectacular view of the Volga, and also the Military Equipment Exhibition named ‘From Gorky citizens — to the Battlefield’ in open-air, which adore not only children but adults, too.

When it is warm outside, everyone can make a breathtaking promenade along the Kremlin’s wall.

Minin Square and the Chkalov Staircase

From the main city square down to the Volga river comes in rings the gorgeous Chkalov Staircase, consisting of 443 steps and symbolizing the Soviet Union’s victory in the battle of Stalingrad.

The upper pace of the staircase has a monument of a famous aviator Valery Chkalov who made a non-stop flight Moscow-Vancouver through the North Pole.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

«Pokrovka» (and this is how the citizens call the main pedestrian street of Nizhny Novgorod) is an analogue to the Arbat in Moscow. To wander along this street is a must-do thing on a must-do list in any cultural programme and business trip because it is here where all the city life is concentrated! Bars and restaurants, alfresco cafes decorated with flowers, museums and shops, souvenir small shops, buildings with astonishing architecture, amusing sculptures and, of course, the locals themselves — smiley, cheerful and benevolent!

Are you an art-lover? If yes, we highly recommend that you should step into The Academic Drama Theatre of Nizhny Novgorod (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 13), where wonderful plays are shown, or go on a visit to the Russian Photography Museum, where one can always find outstanding exhibitions.

Have you come to Nizhny with your children? There is no doubt you should go to the Academic Puppet Theatre of Nizhny Novgorod and take a picture of you baby sitting on a bronze goat which you can find opposite the Drama Theatre.

Are you dying of hunger? Our advice is to lunch in cafe «Michelle» (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 6) or restaurant «Pogrebok Shato/Wine-vault Chateau» (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 6). We guarantee you the best food and service available in these dining places.

Are you in search of something surprising and rare? Then make a turn to the yard of house 8 and you will find magical art-space, filled with hand-made wonderworks of artists and craftsmen of Arts and Crafts of Nizhny Novgorod. And if you are really lucky, you will run into a concert or exhibition in «Kladovka» (this is the exact name of the place), which can’t but raise your mood!

The Central Bank (Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, 26)

You can’t overpass this majestic building which resembles more of a fairy-tale castle than of a bank!

Having been built in 1913, this building is devoted to the 300 years of the Romanovs reign. That is proved by a two-headed eagle on the facade.

The Nativity of St. John the Baptist’s Cathedral (Ivanovsky Syezd, 16)

This ancient cathedral is renowned for the fact that it was from its porch that the merchant Kozma Minin gathered the Territorial Army, which freed Moscow from Polish invasion, in 1612.

Right in front of the cathedral, in Public Unity Square, there is a reduced copy of a monument to Minin and Pozharsky, erected in Red Square of Moscow.

Rozhdestvenskaya Street

This pitched street attracts attention of locals and guests of the city. It is here where it is possible to lose yourself in the history of Nizhny and rest from the city huddle in homey cafes and petty restaurants.

The buildings of the one before last century take tourists aboard into the 19th century atmosphere and gift them with an incredible sense of involvement in history.

We may call the church of Synaxis of the Most Holy Theotokos (Holy Mother Cathedral), which is brightly outlined against houses by its specky domes, the main attraction of Rozhdestvenskaya street. This masterpiece of the church architecture was erected in 1719 and funded by the merchant Stroganov.
